If you've never hired a lawyer before, the idea of calling one can feel intimidating. It shouldn't. Here's exactly what happens when you contact the office, what to prepare, and what comes next.

It's Free, and There's No Obligation

Initial consultations are free for most practice areas. You can schedule by calling 215-949-0888 or using our online form. Consultations can be conducted by phone or in person at the Bristol office.

There's no pressure to hire us. Many people call just to understand their options and get clarity on a confusing situation. That's what the consultation is for.

What to Bring or Have Ready

You don't need to bring anything to get started, but the more information you can share, the more useful the conversation will be. Here's what's helpful depending on your situation:

Estate planning: Existing wills, trusts, and powers of attorney (if any). A rough list of your assets (real estate, retirement accounts, bank accounts, life insurance). Family information, spouse, children, anyone you want to provide for.

Probate or estate administration: The death certificate. (If you're not sure where to start, our step-by-step checklist can help.) The will (if there is one). Information about the decedent's assets, debts, and beneficiaries.

Real estate: The purchase agreement, deed, settlement statement, or any relevant correspondence. For disputes: a timeline of events and copies of communications.

Litigation: Any documents related to the dispute; contracts, emails, letters, court papers if you've been served. A brief written timeline of what happened.

Family law: Existing court orders (custody, support, PFA). Financial information if you're comfortable sharing it. A summary of your situation and what you're hoping to accomplish.

Any situation: Names and dates. A brief summary of what's going on. Questions you want answered.

What Happens During the Consultation

I listen. You explain your situation in your own words. There's no script or intake form to fill out, just a conversation.

I identify the legal issues. Many people don't know exactly what kind of legal problem they have, and that's fine. Part of the consultation is helping you understand what you're dealing with.

I explain your options. What can be done, what the likely outcomes are, what the risks are, and what it would cost. You get honest answers, including "you don't need a lawyer for this" when that's the case.

I discuss fees and timeline. If you decide to move forward, you'll know exactly what the fee arrangement looks like (flat fee, hourly, or contingent depending on the matter) and a realistic timeline for resolution.

What Happens After

If you want to proceed: You'll receive an engagement letter that spells out the scope of work, fee arrangement, and expectations. Nothing starts until you've reviewed and signed it.

If you need time: Take it. There's no expiration on the consultation. Call back when you're ready, whether that's tomorrow or six months from now.

If it's not the right fit: We'll tell you honestly. If your matter is outside the practice areas we handle or you'd be better served by a specialist, we'll do our best to point you in the right direction.
